SeltaSquare (CEO Shin Min-kyung), a company specializing in pharmacovigilance(PV) and safety data, announced the launch of "AI Medical Assessment" Beta, a tool that supports causality assessment for adverse drug events—extending the scope of AI application in PV into the realm of expert judgment.

Until now, AI adoption in the field has mainly focused on streamlining repetitive tasks such as data entry, information retrieval, and document drafting. SeltaSquare takes this a step further, introducing a new way of working in which AI first prepares the necessary information and evidence to support experts during the Medical Assessment process—where professionals must synthesize diverse information to reach a judgment—thereby supporting expert decision-making.

With AI Medical Assessment, once a user uploads an ICSR XML file containing completed case information, the AI analyzes the case data and provides a draft causality assessment between the drug and the adverse event, along with the supporting rationale. Rather than requiring experts to manually review case information, organize relevant evidence, and write the assessment from scratch as before, the tool allows experts to begin their review directly from an AI-prepared draft assessment and evidence base.

Notably, the tool does not simply present a causality assessment result—it also provides the reasoning behind the judgment, evidence supporting or contradicting it, and any uncertain information. Where necessary, users can also check the relevant information in the original ICSR, allowing experts to directly review the AI's results and evidence before making the final determination.

The tool also supports causality assessment based on WHO-UMC criteria, enabling more consistent review of judgments that might otherwise vary by case or assessor. Rather than simply accepting AI output as-is, it follows a "Human-in-the-Loop" approach, in which AI prepares the necessary information and draft assessment while the expert reviews, refines, and finalizes the judgment.

SeltaSquare CEO Shin Min-kyung said, "Medical Assessment is an area that requires medical expert judgment, and it remains rare worldwide to find commercialized AI products actually applied to this kind of work. While most AI today focuses on streamlining repetitive tasks such as data entry, search, and document drafting, SeltaSquare is moving beyond that role to actively commercialize products that support expert judgment and decision-making."

She added, "This Beta version first introduces the core function of AI-based causality assessment and supporting rationale, but going forward we plan to develop it further by connecting it to the actual workflows of PV professionals, so that AI can provide meaningful support throughout the entire work process. We aim to go beyond simple task automation and build a new way of working in PV where experts and AI collaborate together."
